Biography 略歴	【竹林上人(1758～1800)】 宝暦八年（十年という説もあり）香川県木田郡三木町白羽に生れる。 幼名を栄六、名を独雄、竹が好きで自ら竹林、竹谷と号した。 １３歳で真言宗高松多聞寺で出家得度、安永９年（1780年）志度・自性院に転居し、 天明６年（1786年）２６歳の時、師哲雄の命により第七代自性院主に就任したが、 天明７年３月院主を法弟観道に譲り、三等室に草庵をむすび布教をかさねた。 儒・佛両道に通じ、和歌、俳句、詩文に優れ、又書画は竹を殊の外好み竹林と号した。 常に単衣を着て、暖かい衣服は貧しい者に与え、蚊に血を吸わせ、愛する竹は中ほどから先を切り、釣竿、鳥指棹にさせないようにする等逸話は限りない。 寛政１２年（1800年）６月６日予言して多くの人に見守られながら４３歳で入滅した。 “讃岐の良寛さん”と呼ばれた。 A Shingon Buddhist priest. Well-versed in both Confucianism and Buddhism, he excelled in waka poetry, haiku, and prose. He particularly favored bamboo in his calligraphy and painting, adopting the pen name Bamboo Grove. He always wore a single-layered robe, giving warm clothes to the poor. He let mosquitoes suck his blood and cut his beloved bamboo from the middle down to prevent it from being used for fishing rods or bird-catching poles. Such anecdotes about him are countless.
