Caption 備考	・関防印「長風万里」 ・「丙寅(1866)初春應之図聖君ヵ」「安房守勝義邨」、印「物部義邨」「名垂万古知何用」 【意味】 人の前だけでなく、自分ひとりでいるときも行ないを慎み、道にそむかないようにする。 【Meaning】 Refrain from doing things not only in front of others, but also when you are alone, and do not stray from the path. 【出典】 君子必慎其独也(君子は必ずその独りを慎むなり。)『礼記』大学篇 【種田山頭火が獨慎（独慎）という言葉に関する随筆を遺しています】 独慎〔扉の言葉〕 種田山頭火 （前半部分省略） …… 行乞の或る日、或る家で、ふと額を見たら、『独慎』と書いてあった。忘れられない語句である。これは論語から出ていると思うが、その意味は詮ずるところ、自分を欺かないということであろう。自分が自分に嘘をいわないようになれば、彼は磨かれた人である。人物に大小はあっても人格の上下はない。 　私は五十二歳の新年を迎えた。ふりかえりみる過去は『あさましい』の一語で尽きる。ただ感情を偽らないようにして生きていたことが、せめてものよろこびである。 　独慎――この二字を今年の書き初めとして、私は心の紙にはっきりと書いた。 初出『「三八九」第五集』1933（昭和8）年1月20日 底本『山頭火随筆集』

Biography 略歴	【勝海舟(1823～1899)】 幕末・明治時代の政治家。山岡鉄舟、高橋泥舟とともに幕末の三舟と呼ばれる。 江戸の人。名は義邦、のち明治維新後は安芳（やすよし）と改名。 通称、麟太郎。安房守あわのかみ。 蘭学・兵学を学び、万延元年（1860）幕府使節とともに、咸臨丸かんりんまるを指揮して渡米。 幕府海軍育成に尽力。幕府側代表として西郷隆盛と会見し、江戸無血開城を実現。 明治維新後、海軍卿・枢密顧問官などを歴任。 Vassal of the Shogun, statesman. Born in Tokyo. He studied at the Navy Officer Training School in Nagasaki. He mastered Western studies through Dutch, and Western military science, and went to the United States as captain of the Kanrin Maru in 1860. In 1862, he became gunkan bugyo narabi. In 1864, he became gunkan bugyo (naval commissioner) and opened the Naval Operation Training School in Kobe, where he educated students and samurai from various clans including Ryoma Sakamoto, as well as vassals of the Shogun. During the Boshin War, he negotiated with Takamori Saigo and successfully opened Edo Castle through a bloodless surrender. He successively held important posts in the new government, such as Kaigun Taifu (senior vice minister of the Navy Ministry), sangi (councillor) and kaigunkyo(Navy Minister), and member of the Chamber of Elders. Later he became a privy councillor.
