Biography 略歴	【渡辺省亭（1852～1918）】 明治大正期の日本画家。江戸神田生まれ。本姓吉川、名は義復、通称良助。 16歳のとき菊池容斎に入門し、また柴田是真に私淑。 師風を墨守すべからずという容斎の塾風に従い、花鳥画家として立った。 明治8(1875)年から起立工商会社で輸出工芸の下絵図案を描き、11年のパリ万博に同社から出張。 日本画家の渡欧は、おそらくこれが最初である。帰国後、洋風の質感表現を加えた花鳥画を創出。 万博で高賞を受賞し、国内よりむしろ欧米で高い評価を得た。 作品は欧米各地の美術館やコレクションに含まれている。また木版画、雑誌挿絵も多く制作した。 Japanese painter of the Meiji Taisho period. Born in Kanda, Edo. His real name is Yoshikawa, and his given name is Yoshifumi. At the age of 16, he was introduced to Kikuchi Yosai and became a personal admirer of Shibata Zeshin. In 1875, he began working for the Kiritsu Kosho Company as a draftsman for export crafts, and in 1878, he traveled to Paris to attend the Paris World's Fair. After returning to Japan, he created flower-and-bird paintings with Western-style textures. He won high awards at the Expo and was more highly acclaimed in Europe and the United States than in Japan. His works are included in museums and collections throughout Europe and the United States. He also produced many woodblock prints and magazine illustrations.
