Born in 1792 as the second son of the Shiojiri family in Okayasu (Okayasu-cho, Ayabe City), he was later adopted by the Hasegawa family in Higashihonmachi. When he was young, he left for Kyoto to begin training in the Maruyama school, where he studied under Yamaguchi Soken, one of the ten philosophers of the Okyo school. Sogo was a grandson of Maruyama Okyo. He returned to Kyoto and began to work as a painter of the Maruyama school, but at the age of 54, he fell into a crisis when his right arm became paralyzed. He switched his paintbrush to his left hand and began painting again, producing many excellent works. His fame reached far and wide. He painted animal figures with great skill. |
