He studied under Sugitani Sekk?, the official painter to the Hosokawa family of the Kumamoto domain. In 1887, at age 22, he moved to Tokyo with Sekk?. After staying in Tokyo for about five years, he returned to Kumamoto. Following Sekk?'s death in 1895, he was summoned by the Hosokawa family and moved back to Tokyo. Thereafter, while serving as a retainer for the Hosokawa family, he exhibited works primarily through the Japan Art Association and the Japan Painting Society. He solidified his position in the art world through repeated purchases by the Imperial Household Agency and numerous awards. He achieved success early on by being selected for the Bunten exhibition and, in 1907, performed an imperial calligraphy demonstration, leaving a brilliant trail of accomplishments. However, after failing to be selected for the Bunten in 1914, he abruptly withdrew from the art world. He continued working in places unrelated to the art scene, residing in Tokyo, Osaka, Yamanashi, and Kamakura. He passed away in 1951 at the age of 86. |
