Biography 略歴	【森祖仙(1747～1821)】 江戸時代後期の日本画家。森派の祖。 生涯については不明なことも多く生まれは、大阪や長崎、西宮など諸説あるが、大阪を中心に活躍した。 絵を父：森如閑斉に習い、のち狩野派の山本如春斉に学んだ。 師の死後は沈南蘋や円山応挙の写実描写に影響を受け、写実を重視するようになり猿画の名手として評判が高くなった。 祖仙の動物画は細密でユーモラスな仕草にあふれる独自の画風で、90%以上は猿の絵と言われる。 次兄である森周峯の子であり円山応挙の高弟でもあった森徹山を養子に迎えた。 徹山の後に森一鳳、森寛斎が続き、森派と称される。 ボストン美術館やフリーア美術館など海外の美術館の所蔵作品も多い。 Painter. Active in the Osaka area, produced many paintings of animals based on sketches from life. Especially known for pictures of monkeys, deer being his next favorite theme. In about 1808, at the age of sixty-one, changed the first character of his name to one meaning 'monkey'. Founded a school of animal painting with his brother Shuho, in Osaka, which paralleled the Maruyama school in Kyoto.Born in Osaka. Name Morikata (or Shush?), adult name Shukuga, and artist names Sosen (using two different compounds of Chinese characters), Jokansai, and Reimeian. Father was Mori Jokansai, and elder brothers were Mori Y?shin and Sh?h? (q.v.). His name appears in the 1777 (An'ei 6) edition of the Naniwamaru K?moku "as an old pupil of the deceased Ch?y?do Y?koku" and he is said to have studied painting under Katsube Joshunsai.
