【片山楊谷(1760～1801)】 長崎出身。 幼少期に父を亡くし、1772（安永元）年13歳の頃故郷を離れ、絵筆を携えて諸国を遊歴したと伝わる。 17歳で鳥取の興禅寺に逗留して絵を描き、結婚。 若桜藩主・池田定常の計らいで茶道役の片山宗把の家に夫婦とも養子となり家督を継いだ。 その後も京都や兵庫を遊歴、寛政7年には妙法院真仁法親王、また光格天皇に召されて絵を描いた。 楊谷の画風は、隠元禅師（1592-1673）をはじめ黄檗宗とともに長崎へもたらされた中国趣味の強烈な色使いで、 清代の画人・沈南蘋（しんなんぴん, 1682-?）の写実技法や費漢源などに近いとされる。 特に虎の絵は、虎の毛を細い線で丹念に表し、応挙の柔らかな毛描きとは対照的な猛獣の固い毛が特徴。「楊谷の毛描き」と呼ばれている。 Painter. Born in Nagasaki and his paintings drew on the style developed in that town through contact with Chinese artists. Made extensive travels from the age of 13 onwards. By age 19 already had pupils; in 1792 he and his wife were adopted into the Katayama family in Tottori domain; in 1795 he received permission to travel to Kyoto, where he did a painting performance for Shinnin-hoshinno (abbot of Myoshinji and the emperor's younger brother) and was invited to imperial palace; in 1800 produced sliding door paintings for Sanro-ji temple in Harima but died suddenly at the nearby Yumura hot springs. |
